Straining Beer

The essential equipment for home brewing are:

  1. A vessel for boiling the ingredients.
  2. Fermentation vessel. bottles, caps, and a capping tool.
  3. Muslin or Terylene for straining.
  4. Plastic tube for syphoning.

Straining

After boiling the ingredients to make the wort, straining is necessary in order to remove the spent hops and other debris.

Straining can be accomplished by pouring or syphoning the liquid through clean muslin or 'Terylene' net supported in a colander.

The necessity for straining can be avoided by tying the hops in a bag of muslin or 'Terylene'. A few large marbles placed in with the hops will help keep the bag submerged in the boiling liquid.

Boiling the hops loose in the wort probably results in a somewhat better extraction of the flavour and preservative components.

However, this is offset by the convenience of using such a bag. There is very little difference in the results. The method that you use will depend on what you find more convenient.

Remember: When you wash the straining cloth, be certain to rinse it extremely well so as to remove every trace of soap or detergent.
